Civil Ceremonies
Civil Ceremonies take place in the Dower House if you want a Civil Wedding. The Parish Church of St Andrews which stands in the grounds is also an option if you want a Religious Wedding Ceremony as are a number of other nearby churches for couples who qualify and by arrangement with the vicar.
The Dower House is the oldest building within Brympton and dates from about 1350. It has a long central aisle which leads to a beautiful arched medieval window. It is flooded with light and furnished with bespoke pews. Double doors lead from the Dower House onto the South Terrace. Notwithstanding all of this effortless perfection it has also been recognised by English Heritage as an important historic monument!
The Parish Church of St Andrews is not quite as old as the Dower House but is just as lovely! Couples wanting to get married at St Andrews will either need to establish a qualifying connection or establish residency within the parish.
The qualifying connections were created by the Marriage Act of 2008 and you are entitled to get married in St Andrews if:
- Either you or your parents or grandparents have either lived, worshipped or been married in the parish
For practical purposes most couples will be able to qualify for marriage at St Andrews through the regular worship clause of the Marriage Act which involves attendance at services for 6 months either by them or their parents. Services at St Andrews occur once every month and the wedding office can give you details of the dates.
Where it is not practical to obtain a qualifying connection - because you live to far away to attend St Andrews for example - then you can still get married there; you would simply need to satisfy the 15 day residency requirement. Again details of this can be obtained from the wedding office.
Either way once you have obtained a qualifying connection or satisfied the residency requirements then you are legally entitled to get married in the church! Your next step would be to make arrangements with the vicar.
